The purpose of a good shower screen is to distribute the water flowing from the brewing unit as evenly as possible over the coffee in the screen. While this sounds simple at first, experience shows that most shower screens only adequately fulfill this task. The inventor of the Matrix Shower Screen, Omri Almagor, has now impressively solved this problem.

His solution consists of a stainless steel plate constructed from dozens of layers; each layer consists of tiny spheres (7 µ in diameter) spaced 4 to 5 µ (Mu) apart. This construction leads to the following positive effects:

As the water has to find its way through this labyrinth of beads, the water's pressure decreases and it is distributed evenly over the ground coffee. Both of these factors ensure that all the coffee is extracted evenly and completely. Any kind of channeling (the water rushing through some parts of the coffee) is avoided.
The improved extraction of the coffee allows it to be ground more finely and the amount of ground coffee to be reduced.
However, the tiny spaces between the beads increase capillary pressure, causing the water and carbon dioxide to split into hot water, steam, and carbon dioxide. The result: a thicker and firmer crema.
This also has a lasting effect on the espresso's acidity, preventing unpleasant acidity. This extraction also balances out unpleasant acidity in lighter roasts with more floral and fruity notes, which otherwise tend to quickly become aggressively acidic.
Finally, the brewing head is protected from contamination by the ground coffee by the fine-pored structure of the shower sieve.
