The bottomless portafilter allows you to see straight away whether the grind, the amount of ground coffee and the pressure when tamping are correct. Only then will the espresso flow together into a concentrated stream and offer a small, beautiful spectacle. Without the spouts, you save even more space and can place larger cups under the portafilter.
