Depending on the grinder, dry or freshly roasted coffee beans tend to become very statically charged, meaning a lot of coffee ends up next to the portafilter. This is particularly annoying with single dosing if some of the beans don't end up in the portafilter. The funnel can remain on the portafilter during tamping.
